Configuration Procedures

Migrate from MINET to SIP Firmware

Before provisioning your Mitel devices for 8x8 Services, you must first ensure that they are updated to the latest SIP-based firmware.
If the devices have been previously configured to work with a Mitel PBX, they will be using a proprietary Mitel firmware that is not compatible with 8x8.
To determine the firmware being used on the device, follow the steps below:
  1. Press the Settings button (gear icon) on the phone.
  1. Select Status and press the Select soft-key.
  1. Scroll down to Phone Info > Model section to see the current installed firmware version:

Firmware Migration through the Phone Menu

Important: The firmware update/migration process requires the entry of admin credentials with the phone's current admin password. If your phone was previously provisioned on another phone network, and you don't have access to the correct password (other than the default password 22222), you will need to reach out to your previous provider to obtain the correct password.
To manually update the phone’s firmware:
  1. Press the Settings button (gear icon) on the phone.
  1. Select Manual Software Upgrade and press the Next soft-key.
  1. Enter 22222 as the Administrator Password and press the Enter soft-key.
  1. In Manual Software Upgrade:
    1. Change the Download Protocol to HTTPS.
    2. Enter mitel.8x8.com as the HTTPS Server.
    3. Enter mitel as the HTTPS Path.
    4. Press the Save soft-key.
    5. The phone will automatically reboot and install the latest sip firmware from the 8x8 servers. Do not power off or disconnect the phone during this process.
  1. Once the reboot has completed, you can review the new firmware version, if needed:
    1. Press the Settings button (gear icon) on the phone.
    2. Select Status and press the Select soft-key. The new firmware version is displayed in Status > Firmware Info > Platform.

Obtaining a Device’s IP Address for 8x8 Provisioning

Once your device is connected to your network and upgraded to a non-MINET firmware, you’ll need to obtain its assigned IP address.
  1. Press the Settings button (gear icon) on the phone.
  1. Select Status and press the Select soft-key.
  1. Scroll down to Network and note the phone’s IP Address.

Obtaining a Device’s MAC Address for 8x8 Activation

If you activate the device on 8x8’s service using its MAC address, there are two ways to obtain it from the device.

Option 1: Obtain the MAC Address from the Device Label

  • Your device’s MAC Address is located on the label on the rear panel of the phone.

Option 2: Obtain the MAC Address from the Status screen

  1. Press the Settings button (gear icon) on the phone.
  1. Select Status and press the Select soft-key.
  1. Scroll down to the Network and note the MAC Address.

Manually Provisioning a Phone on SIP Firmware for 8x8 Services

Your device must be provisioned for 8x8’s service before it can be activated and used with 8x8.
Important: To provision a Mitel phone via its web GUI, the phone must not have MINET firmware.
  1. In a web browser on a computer connected to the same network as the phone, navigate to the phone’s assigned IP address that you obtained earlier.
  2. Enter admin as the username and 22222 as the password.
  1. Navigate to Advanced Settings > Configuration Server.
  2. Select HTTPS in the Download Protocol drop-down menu.
  3. In HTTPS Server field, enter the following line:
    • mitel.8x8.com
  4. In the HTTPS Path field, enter the following line:
    • mitel
  5. In the HTTPS Port field, enter the following value:
    • 443
  6. Click the Save Settings button.

The phone will automatically reboot. Allow several minutes for the phone to reboot and connect to 8x8 servers.
Once reboot is complete, your phone can be activated on 8x8’s service either using an activation code or via MAC address in the user’s 8x8 Admin Console profile.

Reset a Device to Factory Settings

Follow the steps below if there is ever a need to reset your device to factory settings.
Note: For this procedure, you will need the phone’s current IP address and admin password.
  1. Log into the phone’s web GUI by navigating to its current IP address in a web browser.
  2. Navigate to Operation > Reset.
  3. In Current Settings, click the Restore button.
You'll receive a confirmation that the phone has been reset to factory defaults.
  1. The phone must be physically restarted via the web interface or physical phone menu. There are two options for this:
    • Option 1:
      1. Navigate to Operation > Reset.
      2. Click the Restart button.
  • Option 2:
    1. Press the Settings button (gear icon) on the phone.
    2. Scroll to the far right Restart icon and press the Select soft-key.
  1. Select Yes and press the center button on the phone's circular pad.
Important: After resetting your phone to factory defaults, you will need to re-provision and then re-activate the phone to restore its connection to 8x8 services.
Password change: Once a phone is provisioned for 8x8 services, its admin password will change to a new password instead of the factory default one. Device admin passwords can be looked up in the 8x8 Admin Console.
