Change or Reset Voicemail Password

Objective

Change or reset your voicemail password using 8x8 Work for Desktop or directly from your phone. This article also explains voicemail password requirements.

Overview

You can change your voicemail password in several ways:
  • From 8x8 Work for Desktop
  • From your desk phone or mobile phone
  • Through the Admin Console (admin only)
     
Voicemail passwords are often set by an administrator initially, but users may be allowed to change their own passwords.
 

Setting Your Voicemail Password for the First Time

In most cases, an administrator sets the voicemail password when configuring your extension in the Admin Console.
If you are allowed to set your own password from your phone:
  1. From your own extension, dial 555.
  2. Press the # key.
  3. You will hear the message: “This is not a valid password.”
  4. Stay on the line and listen to the brief voicemail tutorial.
  5. When prompted, follow the instructions to create your voicemail password.

Change Your Voicemail Password in 8x8 Work for Desktop

Steps

  1. Log in to 8x8 Work for Desktop.
  2. Open the menu and select Settings.
  3. Select Account Settings.
  4. If prompted, log in with your 8x8 username and password.
  5. Under Voicemail Settings, select Reset Access PIN.
  6. Enter a new voicemail password.
  7. Click Save.

Change Your Voicemail Password from Your Phone

Access the Voicemail System

  • From your own extension:
    • Dial 555, then enter your current voicemail password.
       
  • From another extension in your system:
     
    • Dial 500
      Enter your extension number
    • Enter your current voicemail password
       
 

Change the Password

  1. After logging in, press the * key to access the Main Menu.
  2. Press 3 for User Preference Options.
  3. Press 1 to change your voicemail password.
  4. Follow the voice prompts to complete the change.
  5. Press 9 to exit voicemail.

Voicemail Password Requirements

Your voicemail password must meet all of the following rules:
  • Must be 6 to 15 digits
  • Must not use the same digit repeatedly (for example: 0000, 1111)
  • Must not be sequential (for example: 1234 or 4321)
  • Must not match your extension number
  • Must not be a year between 1900 and 2017
    Must not use repeating patterns (for example: 1010, 1212, 3131)
    Must not be:
     
    • 2580
      0852
    • 5683
      (These are common keypad patterns or word associations.)

Additional Information

  • For security reasons, accessing voicemail from an external (non-8x8) phone number is restricted.
  • Workaround:
    You can create an Auto Attendant with a menu option that routes calls to extension 500, which allows voicemail access.
  • If you don't know your voicemail password or you are unable to reset it, contact your system administrator for assistance, as they can reset it for you from the Admin Console

Your voicemail password has been updated and secured in accordance with 8x8 password requirements.
