Overview

This guide will show you how to enable SMS for one or more users who have been assigned a new or existing Australian mobile phone number in your 8x8 Work service.
You can also disable SMS for one or more users.

  • References to SMS campaign registration in 8x8 Admin Console > SMS apply only to the US and Canada, and should be ignored.
  • Only one phone number at a time may be enabled per user for SMS, even if the user has multiple phone numbers assigned to them in their Admin Console user profile.

Procedures

Enable or Disable SMS for Individual Users from their User Profile

You can enable or disable an individual user's SMS functionality from their 8x8 user profile. This process works only for numbers that do not already appear on the SMS page.
  1. Log in to 8x8 Admin Console.
  2. Select Users.
  1. To the right of the desired user, select Edit (pencil icon).
  2. From the left menu, select SMS enabled numbers or scroll down to that section.
Important:
  • Only one phone number at a time may be enabled per user, even if they have more than one number assigned in their user profile.
  • If the user has been assigned multiple numbers, and you need to enable a different phone number than the one currently enabled for SMS, click SMS Disabled for the desired number to enable it as the preferred number. This will automatically disable SMS for the originally-enabled number.
  • Assignment status is related only to US and Canadian SMS provisioning.
  1. Enable or disable SMS functionality for the user, as needed:
    • Enabling: In SMS enabled numbers, click the SMS Disabled switch to enable the desired phone number.
      • Only one number at a time may be enabled for SMS within a user profile.
  • Disabling: In SMS enabled numbers, click the SMS Enabled switch to disable the desired phone number.
  1. Click Save to complete your change. Depending on your action, the Status field will display one of the following:
    • Enabled
    • Disabled (or blank)

Enable SMS for One or More Users from the SMS Page

You can enable SMS for individual or multiple users from the SMS page in Admin Console.
Note: Phone numbers that you’re enabling SMS for must each already have been assigned to users in order to proceed with the final step in this process.
  1. In 8x8 Admin Console, select SMS.
  1. Scroll down to Your SMS enabled phone numbers and select + Enable phone numbers.
  1. In the popup window, add your phone number(s) in E.164 format, and press your keyboard <Enter> key to validate your number(s).
    • E.164 format requires that you remove spaces or other characters, and replace the leading 0 with a + and the country code.
    • For example: Australian mobile number 0491 571 491 must be entered as +61491571491.
  2. Finally, select Enable. The effect is immediate, with no confirmation prompt.
  • Note: Numbers that are not assigned to users will appear in the enablement window with a red border, and the Enable button will be inactive (gray). A phone number must be assigned to a user before it can be enabled for SMS.

Disable SMS for One or More Users from the SMS Page

You can disable SMS for individual or multiple users from the SMS page in Admin Console.
  1.  In 8x8 Admin Console, select SMS.
  1. Scroll down to Your SMS enabled phone numbers to see the list of 8x8 Work users who currently have SMS enabled on your service.
  2. Click the check box next to the name of each person whose SMS you are disabling. The More button will appear at the top-right.
  3. Click More and select Un-assign and disable SMS.
    • This action is immediate, with no confirmation prompt.
    • Refresh your Admin Console SMS page to update the enabled-user list.
Once the changes have been completed:
  • The disabled phone number(s) will disappear from the Your SMS enabled phone numbers list.
  • In the affected user’s Admin Console profile(s), their phone number's SMS enabled numbers > Status will appear as Disabled or blank.
