Overview
In 2024, carriers announced that as of June 17th 2024, all outbound SMS/MMS traffic from UNREGISTERED phone numbers is blocked. This is a carrier mandate, and is not something that 8x8 has control over.
To enable user-assigned 8x8 Work phone numbers to send SMS/MMS messages, they must be assigned to an active, registered SMS Campaign.

Questions and Answers
What does this mean?
Effective June 17th, 2024, outbound SMS/MMS messages from unregistered phone numbers in 8x8 Work apps cannot be delivered to their destination.
8x8 Work app users will be notified with a system message that their messages are not being delivered:

How do I check if I have a working SMS Campaign?
Administrators can verify this in 8x8 Admin Console, in the SMS section. Please note that SMS campaigns configured in 8x8 Admin Console apply only to SMS/MMS traffic via 8x8 Work apps (UC, not Contact Center).

There is a warning message on my SMS Page when I try to enable more numbers, what do I do?
By default each campaign allows up to 48 numbers.
In order to request that limitation to be removed, 8x8 must work with carriers to get their approval on a campaign-by-campaign basis. This process unfortunately is not currently automated. For additional details on how to address this issue please see the following article:
Not all of my users need SMS. Do I need to do anything with the numbers that do not need SMS capabilities?
Users who do not need SMS/MMS capabilities should have their SMS feature disabled, primarily to avoid confusion.
- Note that users who were provisioned before February 15, 2023 automatically had the SMS feature enabled, and will see the capability on their 8x8 Work apps.
- However, if those users are not added to a valid SMS Campaign, and they try to send an SMS or MMS message, they will receive a system error message notifying them of their unregistered status, and their outbound SMS/MMS messages will be blocked.
Is there a cost involved with registration?
Registration with The Campaign Registry is required and has an associated cost: there are both a one-time registration fee and monthly campaign maintenance fees.
8x8 customers are responsible for the one time registration fee of $89 USD at the time of registering their SMS campaigns. However, the monthly maintenance fee will be absorbed by 8x8.
The registration fee will show up as a separate order invoice on your billing.
Can I opt out of the registration process?
US and Canadian customers cannot opt out of SMS Campaign registration.
Unregistered phone numbers can not send SMS/MMS messages as of June 17, 2024.
In order to make sure that your users can send SMS/MMS messages:
- Please be sure to complete the SMS Registration process.
- All phone numbers that need to use SMS/MMS must be assigned to your verified campaign.
How do I complete the SMS registration process?
Administrators can complete their SMS Registration using the fully automated self service web form in 8x8 Admin Console.
