Migrating Direct Routing User Phone Numbers to Operator Connect

Objective

Repurpose a user's phone number from 8x8 Voice for Microsoft Teams (Direct Routing) to your Microsoft Operator Connect service.
Important: For users to be assigned an Operator Connect phone number within the Teams admin center, they must first be assigned a Teams Phone Standard license or equivalent to enable PSTN calling within Microsoft Teams. Without the proper license assigned, users will not appear in the search list for phone number assignment.
The processes in this article apply to both 8x8 Voice for Microsoft Teams users and 8x8 Phone App users.

Procedure

The phone numbers you are migrating from 8x8 Voice for Microsoft Teams to Operator Connect must first be unassigned from the users in both 8x8 Admin Console and in the Micosoft Teams admin center.
  1. Log in to 8x8 Admin Console and navigate to Home > Users.
  2. Locate the user whose phone number you are migrating, and select Edit (pencil icon).
  3. Scroll down to Services and permissions.
  4. Select X next to each service license to remove it and all associated options directly beneath them from the user's profile. Note that you can back out of this process at any time until you press Save.
  1. Select Continue to confirm the license removal.
  1. At the bottom of the page, select Save to complete your changes. The user should now have no 8x8 licenses or phone numbers assigned to them in 8x8 Admin Console.
  1. Log in to the 8x8 Voice for Teams admin portal. You can navigate there by selecting the Voice for Microsoft Teams icon in 8x8 Admin Console.
  1. Navigate to the Users tab and click Sync Now to initiate both the PBX and Teams sync processes.
Important:
  • The Sync Now process must be completed successfully before following the next step in this process (step 9).
  • This Sync Now process must be performed by a Microsoft administrator with sufficient permissions on the Microsoft tenant to make changes to users in the Microsoft Teams admin center. Sufficient permissions in 8x8 Admin Console are also required.
Once the Sync Now process is successfully completed, you will have deprovisioned the phone numbers from the Teams users in the Microsoft Teams admin center.
  1. Now return to the 8x8 Admin Console and navigate to Home > Phone numbers. The phone numbers you have released will now appear as Available when selecting the Availability > Available filter.
  1. Select More Options (three dots) at the far right of an available number that you wish to assign, and select Assign to Operator Connect.
  1. Confirm that your phone numbers assigned to Operator Connect in the 8x8 Admin Console appear in the Microsoft Teams admin center in Voice > Phone numbers.
IMPORTANT:
  • It can take up to 10 minutes for phone numbers assigned to Operator Connect to appear in the Phone numbers page.
  • Bulk Assignment: If phone numbers are assigned to Operator Connect using the bulk option, the numbers will appear progressively as the service pushes the numbers to the Microsoft Teams Admin Center. They will not all appear at the same time.
  1. Finally, assign your desired Operator Connect phone numbers to Microsoft Teams users to allow them to make and take calls.
